My dog has arthritis, what now?
When you find your dog has arthritis, there are number of areas to consider.
Diet
- Supplements
- Glucosamine
- Chondroitin
- Turmeric
- Omega 3
- Aspirin (formulation for dogs)
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs
- Rimadyl
- Specialised Dog food
- Liquid intake
- Avoid fatty processed foods
- Avoid sugar and sweet things
While walking
- Support helpers for back legs
- May include harnesses for lifting and stairs
- Wheels for back legs
Exercise
- Hydrotherapy for dogs - walking in water helps
- Slower but more varied walks - hide and seek games, different paths different smells
- Instead of run and fetch, could be shake and pull - toys may change - antlers to chew
- Keep your dog warm and dry
Transport
- Foldable ramp for the car - your dog can't jump up any more
- Dog buggies for smaller dogs that can fit - to get them to the park when walking
Sleep & Resting
- Memory Foam Dog Bed to ease joint pain while resting
- No more climbing up to the couch, it can be too painful
- No more climbing onto the bed - discourage this, it could do more damage.
- Apply warm compresses to painful joints
- Electric blanket for cold nights
Cleaning and grooming
- Long, warm showers or baths
- Hot and cold treatments
Support
- Extra use of the front legs may require physio to ensure better balance and strength
- Veterinary operations when necessary may help
- X-rays to see where the damage is, and what can be done
- Emotional support - your dog needs more hugs and compassion - getting old is not easy
